How do I (or my child) get started into modeling?
The best way to begin is by geting a copy of THE WORLD AGENCY LIST.
This directory lists the legitimate agencies throughout the world.
Look up the agencies closest to you and contact them to determine whether you or your child has modeling potential. If you are interested in pursuing modeling in New York, get the Models Mart New York
MODELS BLACK BOOK. Never use a phone book or the internet to find an agency because
scam artists frequently list themselves in hopes the uninformed will give them
a call. Do your homework. Know how deep the water is before diving into the
pool. Models Mart has a whole library of useful books and videos for aspiring
models and their parents to learn how the modeling profession functions and
how to avoid the pitfalls.

Should I go to a modeling/talent convention or a model search?
Conventions and searches, when sponsored by legitimate organizations, can be an
excellent learning experience as well as the opportunity of a lifetime. More and more top
models and actors are being discovered at these events all over the United States and
Canada. Many conventions have contestants who come from all parts of the world to compete.
It is a unique situation to be seen by the world's leading scouts and agents all at one
time.

Do you know of a good composite company?
There are many good ones throughout North America. Some just do one side black
and white, others will do full color or black and white on two sides. These tend to be
more expensive. The new laser cards are a less expensive alternative and can give you
satisfactory results if done by a good company. Always get samples from several companies
and compare quality and prices before purchasing.

Is this agency legitimate?
If you are not sure about an agency, check to see if there are any complaints
against them on file with the better business or consumers bureau. Ask for the
agency's client list and verify whether the agency does in fact provide models
for the clients on the list; talk
to models the agency represents and find out if they have gotten work and been
paid in a timely fashion by the agency. Never
pay an up-front fee, a "filing" fee etc. Legitimate agencies make
money by taking a percentage of the money you earn from jobs they get for you.
Generally speaking, legitimate agencies have more potential models knocking
at their door than they can represent, so be very wary of agencies that advertise
for models. More often than not, these are photographic scams just waiting to
put you through the mill.

Do you know any good photographers?
There are many good photographers, but they may not be right for you. The only
way to find out is to interview them. LE BOOK list many of the top photographers
in the major market areas. Models in New York may also purchase a list of Test
Photographers from Models Mart, that is, photographers who will shoot rolls
of films of new models for nominal fees, sometimes for nothing if you are willing
to help them out on a project for free in exchange for some prints.

I'm petit. What do I do?
There is no such thing as "a petit." A woman who does not have the
physical requirements for high fashion or runway must think of herself as a
"performer" not a "petit." You can do a commercial print,
body parts modeling, fit modeling, convention modeling, be a spokeswomen, as
well as do the occasional work for petites on
the runway, catalogue work etc. Just because you have a small body does not
mean the scope of your talent is diminutive.

This agency I went to said I had a commercial look. What is that?
A commercial look is a non fashion look. A more typical, everyday look more
suited for commercial print, that is product advertising (cars, computers, food
etc) as opposed to fashion clothing.

Do you have any 8 x 10 portfolios?
Yes, we do. Should you as a model get one? No. The standard book
for models
is 9x12 without zipper or handles called a pressbook.
The most popular one with
models and agencies today is the
Scuba Book because it is made of neoprene,
the wet suit material and is extremely durable. Why 9x12? Because it will accommodate
models magazine tear sheets better than the 8x10 size page.

What does editorial mean?
Fashion magazines have "editorial" sections which will feature different
fashion spreads arranged by the editorial staff as opposed to an advertiser.
Therefore, the photographic style is of a freer style and frequently done on
location as opposed to the more rigid, posed look
of catalogue work don in a
studio.

What is the best agency?
Any agency that believes in you and is willing to work hard to promote you is
the best one. Many times it is better to start at a smaller, newer agency where
you will not be lost in the crowd. Many of the larger,
more famous agencies
have less time to bring along new talent
unless the model's potential is readily
self-evident.
